MATTHEW 7:24-27

Happy New Year and welcome to 2018 THE YEAR OF BREAKTHROUGH here at CV Church.  The foundation for a lifestyle of breakthrough is a daily regimen of being in God’s Word and prayer. We follow a bible reading program that if you will faithfully read through it every day you will get through the entire bible once and the New Testament twice. Why is this so important? I want you to hear from Jesus Himself on this from Matthew 7:24-27.

“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. 25 Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. 26 But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. 27 When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.” In other words Jesus says in order to build on the solid rock means to be a hearing, responding disciple, not a phony superficial one. As you practice personal obedience to God’s Word by being in His Word daily in a disciplined way your life becomes founded on the solid foundation of God’s Word and character and you will breakthrough to weathering the storms of life. In this daily devotional we will use what is called the SOAP method. You can learn more from reading Wayne Cordeiro book THE DIVINE MENTOR. S stands for Scripture. As you read I recommend you keep a journal and write down the leading verse or verses that catch your attention as you read. O stands for observation. Write out a few of your observations as you read this scripture. A stands for application. Write a sentence or two how you intend to apply the truth of the scripture to your life. P stands for prayer. Write out a couple of sentences of prayer to God to help you apply what you have just read. I guarantee you friend, this is one of the leading ways that you will grow in your love, surrender and obedience to God’s Purpose and Plan for your life. I consider it a privilege that you will join me on this exciting journey in 2018 as we lay the foundation in God’s Word for our year of Breakthrough personally and together. January 1 we read Genesis 1 & 2 and Luke 1. Scripture Luke 1:8-20. I will quote vs. 18-20. “Zechariah said to the angel, “How can I be sure this will happen? I’m an old man now and my wife is also well along in years.” 19 Then the angel said, “I am Gabriel! I stand in the very presence of God. It was He who sent me to bring you this good news! 20 But now, since you didn’t believe what I said, you will be silent and unable to speak until the child is born. For my words will certainly be fulfilled at the proper time.” Observation.  I encourage you to read the section I have highlighted. Zachariah who was the priest in the temple on duty has an angel visit him to bring him the good news that God has heard you and your wife’s prayer for a child. He was told that he will have his boy John will bring him and Elizabeth great joy. He foretells the powerful influence their boy will have on his culture. But in vs. 18 Zachariah basically challenges the angel and asks how can I be sure that this will happen since my wife and I are too old. This ship has sailed. Gabriel’s response was quick and sharp. “I stand in the very presence of God. It was Him who sent me to bring you this good news! Vs 20 But now, since you didn’t believe what I said, you will be silent and unable to speak until the child is born. For my words will certainly be fulfilled at the proper time.” My lead observation here is that Zachariah was praying for God to work a miracle in his life but he wasn’t truly prepared to receive it. Application. I am going to be praying for God to do miracles in my life during this year of breakthrough. I choose to receive what I am praying for and I will be open to any way God chooses to answer my prayers. Prayer. Father God in Jesus name, I am asking you to lead me in what breakthroughs to pray for Spiritually, Emotionally, Relationally, Financially, Vocationally, Intellectually and Physically. I believe that with you nothing is impossible. As I in obedience do what is possible and what is my responsibility, I can’t wait to see how you will answer and intervene. I by faith embrace the breakthroughs you have for me in 2018 right now in Jesus name.
